A BRIEF HISTORY IN SHRINE
The real anniversary of the Shrine can be traced back to December 9th 1997, the day on which Tommy Boyd gave permission for this websites construction. Here is the official letter from Talk Radio that set the ball rolling. Click to enlarge.
Seven months later a website was constructed and hosted at Geocities by Jason and Shane. It was amazing at what could be accomplished with just two images of Tommy, sloppy use of English, and questionable student wit. Despite limited resources and talent, the site continued to be updated semi-regularly, and we hoped one day it would eventually reach some kind of an audience. But before then, Shane opted out because he'd fallen in love and couldn't juggle Boyd, a woman, and his interest in Star Trek...
Visitors back then included myself, Shane, my mate Pete and Tommy Boyd himself. But then tragedy and a miracle struck at the same time. In November 1998 Tommy Boyd was sacked from Talk Radio. All of a sudden people miraculously discovered this website's existence, and a handful, became dozens, later hundreds. Among misery, sprang hope. I am sure Tommy was delighted to receive my email the very next week, celebrating my websites success amongst the bereavement of his absence from the airwaves!
With no Tommy on the air, fans were crying out to hear his classic shows, and in my naievety I began a non-profit making service in which visitors could order his shows. After a few weeks of constantly carrying out endless orders, I decided that I could not cope with the overwhelming demand. Thusly I changed my mind about the service; if you wanted audio, you could now download it from the site.
By this time, Tommy Boyd had an official website himself and began to experiment into live webcasting. My good friend Roger Mitham also erected his own Tommy Boyd site, The Tommy Boyd Tribute - which is arguably one of the best all-round sites for Boyd ever created. Sadly neither sites now exist, and the webcast experiments are yet to make a return.
Over these years, the Shrine has existed in various myriads of stages, mainly "under construction" and "soon to be updated" in my lazy webbing efforts. Statistically speaking, this is now the longest running Tommy Boyd fan site on the internet. This site also has audio you can not download from anywhere else, unless the webmaster has nicked it, but who cares, it's a free country.
Now the Shrine is six years old with the welcome addition of co-webmaster, Roger Mitham (formerly of the Tommy Boyd Tribute), the content and possibilites are better than ever. Here's to the next six years!
