George Walker Bush may be the latest example. Has there been a greater President? US leaders traditionally concentrate on domestic affairs in their first term, then seek re-election as global statesmen. George had no option but play the world stage from the off, and won the White House twice: he is a unique winner of Politic's biggest prize. He has held the confidence of key Opec states in order to maintain supply and prices of the West's most essential commodity while inaugurating the process which will upgrade their world from totalitarianism to democracy. Bush has begun to educate the insular American Right in the virtues of spreading one-man-one-vote as a moral responsibility as well as an economic expediency. Like his father, he is a reluctant conquerer, who seeks not to colonise but to liberate. Wash and go. Unlike any wartime leader he squares up against a twisted enemy which ghosts across no precise geography or identifiable nation-state. He is at war with an invisible foe that sanctions massive slaughter of innocents, while he faces bitter condemnation for the tragic but inevitable civilian consequences of military action. In Britain, George has the wholehearted support of the most left-wing Prime Minister since 1945. As a President he may not be a serial womaniser, a whacky ex-Hollywood stooge, a doofy peanut farmer bested by the Ayatollah, a dolt in a football helmet or an out-and-out crook, but every American lighting oil against this winter's cold is also warming themselves with the heroic, selfless dissemination of democracy by their elected leader. This week Britain enjoys a TV showing of Fahrenheit 911. It's a showboating 25 minutes which will excite folk who haven't the balls to go for better things, followed by an hour of drudge. If George had ended America's entente with Saudi Arabia ( begun in Georgia by the USA's most moral Chief of Staff Jimmy Carter) the West would be a vast wasteland of frozen cyclists. The title of the above movie is drawn from a movie called Fahrenheit 451, an intelligent exploration of a totalitarianistic government's desire to incinerate modern ideas; exactly what extremist Islamists are desperate to achieve. Michael Moore has lifted the title, but left the theme behind. George W Bush doesn't burn books, but one day his flame will burn red, white and blue beneath his marble statue in his Washington shrine. For eternity.
