With Star Trek well and truly dead, the playing field is once again level for new and invigorating science fiction. Stand back Star Trek, Doctor Who has arrived and it's going to be better than anything the Yanks have ever spat out!

Sources close to broadcaster Tommy Boyd have indicated that not only is the new Doctor Who one of the greatest episodes the BBC has ever produced; but Christopher Eccleston is the best actor ever cast as the Doctor, beating fan-favourites like Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee hands (and scarfs) down.

The BBC have finally nailed science fiction once and for all.

Tommy Boyd's Thoughts on Doctor Who and contemporary Science Fiction

The return to TV of Doctor Who is an event US viewers should monitor with interest.

Because as usual, their TV Execs will be taking notes.

As with many entertainment genres, the class and craft is with Europe, the bucks and bull is with the States.

Doctor Who is simply the best and the greatest TV sci-fi drama; first off it boasts a unique format. Star Trek, after all, is just cowboys in space. X Files is Cops n' Robbers. Quantum Leap nothing more than Homer's Odyssey. I defy anyone to nominate any genre on which Doctor Who is based.

Doctor Who is witty (name the best joke in Star Trek - bet you'll find 3 better ones in the first episode of the new Doctor Who).

It has intriguing interaction (Does the Doctor do sex?)

Science Fiction should be a mainstream Film and TV genre, but the small screen is being outpaced.

Big shows such as Star Trek and X Files are dead and where are the new Kings?

Hollywood invents ideas; MIB, the Alien Saga, Matrix. Hollywood recycles; I Robot, Spiderman, War Of The Worlds.

US TV neither invents nor recycles, it seems to hash up an old winner in new clothes and then squeeze every last drop out of it until the viewers are calling for mercy killing.

But hang on! That last bit is what happened with Doctor Who!

US TV is so frightened of its own shadow, the people at CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox will be sitting waiting watching the new Doctor Who, and interviewing armies of focus groups to find out what they'll do next.

If you love Sci Fi, especially if you are a Yank, pray for Doctor Who. If it works (and it will) it's what you'll be watching in 5 years time.

In my youth I found Doctor Who the quintessential acknowledgement of my transition to the world of adulthood. Though only 8 when it started, I understood the technology, the issues, the conflicts and the characters. Moreover I grasped the nuances as well as appreciated the adherence to the BBC's commitment to inform, educate and entertain. Who can forget the 13 episodes when the Doctor travelled with Marco Polo with not an alien for a thousand light years. Cracking stuff.

More please.
