He is yet to hear a decent counter argument to the proposition that all science fiction (especially Star Trek) is worthless, and the obsession dangerous. We guarantee that his arguments are so powerful, that you'll not only end up leaving with your original tail between your legs; but some of you will have changed your mind to his way of thinking! After reading the various internet vitriol, Mr Boyd doesn't believe the most vocal of you have the balls to challenge him verbally on the live internet and radio broadcast. So much so he's offered to call you during the show if you care to challenge any of his viewpoints. And what's great, is it won't cost you a penny. My carefully thought through analysis proves that the idealised reduction of complex issues to a matter of "Trying the very last thing that might work...but it's our only chance" and "Fire all Phasers" at precisely 49 minutes into each show is exactly what delivered the world the invasion of Iraq, complete with timetable to fit NBC; and now UPN. This was partly because Americans can't get past the second paragraph on any issue, mostly because the trend in Star Trek is for the alien enemies to look vaguely like foreigners. Klingons = Iraquis. Romulans = Koreans etc. Khan is even an Asian concept. Why do none of the aliens ever look like Yanks? Most of the wallies who watch Star Trek have seen every bloody episode (several times). Was there ever an episode where the bad guys were more all-American than the heroes. No. Point proved. This subversive trick to shorthand one's alliegances engenders exactly the hostility which is the planet's greatest threat. That is not to mention the crass plotlines, wooden acting and peurile special effects. The non-connective dialogue eg Scotty: "Are ye drunk Captain?" Kirk: "No man stands before...his...own...truth alone Scotty." People argue that it's fiction, thanks guys, like I thought it was a documentary. They say it's entertainment: I'd prefer root canal work - yes my teeth are better than any Yank's. The kids who sit slobbering through this predictable tedium like to trash the old TV Westerns eg the Lone Ranger which were superior to Sci Fi in every department. And...are we really heading for a future where everyone wears the same clothes?
